Transitioning to a University-Model® School (Part 3)
By Cecilia Gibbs, Assistant Principal Rock Solid Christian Academy

In my previous post we discussed ways to set the stage for your at-home school sessions. One of the biggest challenges for students can be time management. Speaking of time management, have you heard of the Pomodoro Technique®?

The Pomodoro Technique is a time management method developed by Francesco Cirillo*. This technique uses a timer to break down work into smaller intervals, usually 25 minutes long and separated by 5 minute breaks. Each interval is known as a pomodoro, from the Italian word for tomato (after the tomato-shaped kitchen timer that Cirillo used when he was a university student).

Here’s the Pomodoro Technique® in 5 simple steps:
  1. Choose your task and estimate the total time needed for completion.
  2. Set a timer for 25 minutes (use an egg timer, smart phone, or an app). Tasks can be divided into shorter segments for younger students.
  3. Work on the task for 25 minutes.
  4. Take a 5 minute break for energy renewal, then start another Pomodoro.
  5. Take a 20-30 minute break after completing four Pomodoros.

This strategy works because students completely focus on one task (such as writing or math) without shifting focus or multitasking. During breaks students might:
  • Get up and stretch
  • Take a short walk
  • Eat a snack (Snacking on something healthy can help boost energy levels!)
  • Tidy up or work on a simple chore
  • Get Moving - put on some energetic music & move!
  • Drink Water
  • Be creative!

From recognizing the need for preparation, to having a good sense of how long assignments might take and being able to prioritize activities, time management plays a major role in academic success. Good time management skills impact a student's performance not only in school but in life. You and your student are not alone as you work on these skills. Do not hesitate to reach out when help or encouragement is needed! This is the beauty of the University-Model® school - we are partners on this journey...
