Christ in the Wilderness - Moretto da Brescia, ca. 1515–20 Join us as we read through the Gospel of Luke during this Advent Season... By Cecilia Gibbs, Assistant Principal Rock Solid Christian Academy Luke 4: 1-44 Today we are reading from Chapter 4, in which Luke describes the temptation of Christ in the wilderness. Reading through verses 1-13, Luke clearly describes the temptations Christ endured while in the desert for forty days. As Charles Spurgeon writes, "We read the story of the temptation, perhaps, in six minutes; but it lasted for nearly six weeks, Forty days tempted of the devil.” (Spurgeon, Charles Haddon. "Commentary on Luke 4:4") I remember hearing about Christ's temptation as a child, picturing Satan dodging Christ relentlessly, feeling somewhat overwhelmed and terrified by those images. As I read these verses today, I feel encouraged and strengthened by God's Word. What really encourages me as I read though these passages is that our Lord overcomes each temptation by ALWAYS referring to scripture. Again and again Jesus says, "For it is written." Christ's sword during these moments of temptation was the infallible Word of God. How wonderful it is to know that we have this same weapon available to us as Believers. My prayer for us today is that God's Word will be our armour as we face the inevitable trials and temptations of life. At the same time, I pray Christ's word will be a balm for your heart today and that you will be soothed by His unending love for you. Ephesians 6: 13-17 "Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God." Join us as we celebrate the season with our first annual Christmas Open House!
