Setting the Stage

9/20/2019

Transitioning to a University-Model® School (Part 2)
While attending school 2-3 days a week is a major advantage of the University-Model® school, completing those at-home assignments can seem daunting. No matter what age your student might be, parental involvement is a crucial component for success. Here are a few suggestions for parents as you set the stage for the at-home school days:

  • Select the study space with your student and make this a special spot where learning takes place on a regular basis.
  • Remove distractions: turn off the tv, put away cell phones, and eliminate any other things that could distract your student.
  • Make sure there is sufficient work surface to spread out books.
  • Provide proper lighting, school supplies, and any other tools your student might need in order to make work easier to complete.
  • Make sure your child has a schedule planner for school and writes down assignments daily.
  • Start each day with a devotion or Bible reading session.
  • Be sure to schedule periodic breaks - this is as important as the work to be done!
  • Help your student prioritize homework by deadline and by the amount of time required to complete an assignment. Even older students need help from time to time!***
  • Break large tasks into smaller ones. Your student is less likely to become overwhelmed and procrastinate if assignments are seen as manageable.
  • Be available for questions and encouragement.
  • If in doubt, contact teachers. Older students should be encouraged to contact their teachers if questions arise.
  • Reward your student for a job well done!

Be encouraged as you set the stage for great at-home learning!

Colossians 3:17 “And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”
