Throughout the course, students will write summaries, stories, reports of various lengths, essays, and critiques. They will also learn to write stylishly with dress-ups, sentence openers, and decorations. Additionally, we will explore the structure of the English language and learn how to apply the conventions of grammar and punctuation to that structure using IEW’s Fix-it Grammar (White 3). Finally, we will increase our vocabulary by studying Greek and Latin word roots. Thus, students will progress as writers and thinkers, further preparing them for high school coursework and for life. Foundational Physical Science
(2020-2021 Core Course - Grades 9 & 10) Curriculum: TBD Pre-Requisite: Concurrent enrollment in Integrated Math I or II (Algebra 1 or Geometry) UMSI Parental Roles: Guide for independent study Foundational Physical Science is an introductory course designed to prepare students for high school biology and chemistry. All 9th and 10th grade RSCA students will be required to take Foundational Physical Science for the 2020-2021 school year. This course is also a requirement for any Rock Solid students who have not completed chemistry. Students will cover various concepts such as: scientific processes, structure of the atom, the periodic table, matter, chemical reactions, solutions, motion, forces, and electromagnetism. Working in conjunction with the RSCA Integrated Math Program, Foundational Physical Science will be taught using a combination of labs, lecture, multimedia lessons, class instructional videos, quizzes, papers, and tests. Students will also be engaged in Friday labs, giving them the opportunity to safely and directly apply information learned, through demonstrations and hands-on activities. *Fee: $25 per semester |
Introduction to Composition/Literature 1 (English 9)
Curriculum: Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) by Andrew Pudewa Pre-Requisite: None UMSI Parental Roles: Guide for independent study As Christians, we are called to “accurately handle the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:16). To do this, students must be able to communicate competently. The goal in this two semester course is to help students develop foundational reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills necessary for effective communication in high school and beyond. This will be accomplished through the study of literature (fiction and non-fiction), Greek and Latin roots, and grammar. Likewise, students will develop skills as writers using the Institute for Excellence in Writing methodology. In addition to taking tests and quizzes in this class, they will be expected to complete some projects and multiple written assignments of varying lengths. Ultimately, our goal is for students to cultivate excellent communication skills so that they can shine the light of God’s Truth in a dark world that desperately needs Him. Students will read: To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee; Till We Have Faces by C.S. It focuses on using interactive books and oral stories that contain the most commonly-used words and phrases in Spanish to help students get familiar with a new language easily and quickly. This two-semester course is designed to offer students the opportunity to develop the skills to speak, understand, read and write basic Spanish in most everyday situations with a strong emphasis on witnessing for Christ. |

This essential question will spark our study of American Literature. In addition to careful reading, student will complete projects, give presentations, and write compositions including narrative, persuasive, compare & contrast, and literary analysis essays. UMSI Parental Roles : Guide for independent study
This one semester, required course is scheduled during the spring of the twelfth grade year. Senior Capstone represents a culmination of the RSCA educational experience to this point, in which students will demonstrate the development of their vision for what is next in life, based on the understanding of their Christian identity. This course will involve demonstrating the student's adult ability to bring disparate elements together, culminating in a project and a formal presentation. Students will have to demonstrate that they are capable of going beyond the four walls of academia into the real world, which
will require such skills as communication, collaboration, problem solving, and time management. This course is designed to stretch each student's abilities and solidify their confidence in the ability to assume the unique role(s) in society God has prepared for them.

The students in this class will be expected to master the material in the textbook, participate in discussions using logic and reasoning, write essays and a research paper using critical thinking, memorize material, prepare current event topics, and analyze the topics from a Christian worldview. Therefore, this one semester course has been designed “to provide [students]… with the best possible training in public speaking and communication. It is a comprehensive study of public speaking, intended to give [students]… purpose, practice, and polish in any speaking situation” (Koontz 2003). Throughout this one semester course, students will learn to adapt communication genre and style to best suit their audience and purpose. Students will also develop the ability to use language that explains, persuades, and inspires. Since so many students (and adults!) struggle with anxiety related to public speaking, we will learn techniques for managing and overcoming it. It is a language teaching method based on the idea that the brain needs enormous amounts of Comprehensible Input (CI) to acquire a new language. It focuses on using interactive books and oral stories that contain the most commonly-used words and phrases in Spanish to help students get familiar with a new language easily and quickly. This two-semester course is designed to offer students the opportunity to continue developing the skills needed to speak, understand, read and write basic Spanish in most everyday situations with a strong emphasis on witnessing for Christ. |
